Flights to Amritsar

Early Flights to Amritsar

It was during the 1950s that some commercial flights started from Amritsar Airport. It was on the demand of around three hundred thousand strong Punjabi Sikh diaspora living in Afghanistan that Indian Government started Amritsar Kabul Amritsar flights. Amritsar also started handling domestic flights linking Jammu and Kashmir with New Delhi. Also the flights between New Delhi and Amritsar were always in demand. The Golden Temple served as a catalyst for the success of these flights.

Demand for Birmingham flights

Demand for flights to Amritsar from Birmingham has been a long one.The area in and around Bermingham is the home to the largest expatriate Sikh population. It was during the late 1970s that the Punjabis first raised the demand for flights from Bermingham to Amritsar and vice versa. Indian government conceded to the demand but originated the flights from New Delhi, which increased the flying time to more than twelve hours. As if that was not a big enough spanner, Kabul was added as another intervening destination, which made one way journey fifteen hours long. In spite of this the flights continued till the mid nineteen eighties. The militancy in Punjab from 1983 to 1996, killed this flight.

Turkmenistan/Uzbekistan Flights

During Atal Bihari Vajpayee's tenure two central asian airlines, the Turkmenistan Airlines and the Uzbekistan Airlines, started flying to Dushanbe and Tashkent respectively. From these two cities, there were connecting flights for some of the European cities, including London. The flights by these airlines became successful due to large Punjabi diaspora in Great Britain.

Since you may book months in advance, a lot can happen between booking a ticket and flying out. We do not want you to lose the full value of the one month ticket so it is best to pay the extra £20 or so and go for a four month ticket at the time of booking.
