Wide choice of airlines is available if you are looking for flights to India from US. Either you can take flights to India via the Pacific, or take a European route. There is not much difference between fares either for these flights to India.
Via the Pacific:
Singapore Airlines has several destinations in India so is a very good choice for those who would like to start in the south. Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Amritsar. All SIA flights to India will require an overnight stay in Singapore and a decent hotel is provided and with most of a day to look around as most, if not all Indian flights leave in the early evening (and arrive at an inconvenient time).
Cathay Pacific: flies via HK to BOM or DEL. No overnight, but several hours layover at the airport.
China Eastern Airline: They currently have by far the lowest price fare and they fly to both DEL and BOM via Shanghai. Good connection also.
Via Europe:
KLM: Delhi and Mumbai via Amsterdam have good connection.
Lufthansa: The best flight to india in terms of overall flying hours. DEL or BOM via Frankfurt
